Scout Schultz
Though this may be considered "old news", I still would like to discuss this issue because I was just informed about it. I am originally from Georgia but am currently residing in California with my husband. My sister is Georgia Tech student and informed me on the death of Scout Schultz. The instance began when a call was made about a suspicious male wielding a knife-- but then was later shot and killed by officers. According to Washington Post and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the student left three suicide notes and had a history of mental illness.
To my understanding, Scout appears to have called himself in. He appears to have the intent to hurt himself-- he had described himself to the police and was demanding them to shoot him by screaming "shoot me!". Investigators were not sure if the knife was displayed but there were no firearms. The parents of Scout Schultz were saddened by the loss but also stated that Scout had a history of anxiety, depression, and had spent a bit of time in counseling after attempting suicide.
My opinion on this issue is that police forces, not only in Atlanta but across the country, need to control their ability to inflict force upon civilians. Mental illness and disability are often undiagnosable physically until actions are seen. Police officers must be trained to handle these issues more appropriately without resorting to violence immediatley. Also, Georgia Tech's police officers are not issued stun guns. I am unsure why police on a college campus are equipped with the most deadly weapon, instead of something less lethal. It really makes me wonder how much I trust local law enforcements when they are seen constantly gunning down people's cries for help. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2017/09/17/knife-wielding-campus-pride-leader-killed-by-police-at-georgia-tech/?utm_term=.30adc2c926c9
